Beginning and initial ideas

The goal of this semester’s project is to design and develop а 3D experience using the Unite engine.  I was put in a team of three other people and we started discussing initial ideas. We had to come up with the main idea for our game. We don’t have any limitations in terms of what the actual theme might be or what mechanics we might use. Which actually turned out to be not that beneficial. Since this group is completely different from the one I worked with last semester, it was quite difficult to adapt to their preferences. Each team member had his own idea of what the game should have.

One thing I have learnt form creating the last game is that every team member has his own opinion and it is vital to learn to work with them. Another really crucial thing I have learnt is that there is simply not enough time to include everything we want in our game. This is why I have to learn to adapt to the team I am placed with and also mage my time really careful.

Concept

After many discussions we managed to agree on the most crucial details. Our game is going to include many mechanics, inspired from some AAA titles. The game is going to be played only in first-person view. This is a decision which I completely agree with. Doing a first-person view, we can focus on adding details to the game environment and mechanics, instead on the character’s design.

One other thing we wanted to implement was the parkour element. The group was inspired to include this feature from the game Mirror’s Edge. We have decided that if we can develop this right, the player would get more satisfaction from playing even if the 3D environment isn’t as detailed as a AAA game.

The other big inspiration for our game came from the game Payday. The idea of a task to get in to a building, in order to steal something well guarded, with the option to chose between stealth or loud, really appealed to us. We wouldn’t try to recreate the whole theme or the multiplayer aspect as this would be too time consuming.

We had many other ideas for the game, like the option for a grappling gun or the larger number of levels. But after presenting the initial plans for our game and receiving some feedback, we have decided to focus on the core elements of our game and if we have time left, then we could add as many feature as we like.

Gameplay

After many discussions, ideas and feedback, we have decided that our main focus for now would be to create a working prototype, consisting of the core gameplay elements.

The game is going consist of a first-person view of the main character, who is trying to steal something important from a large mansion. The player would have the option to either go loud and face the consequences of fighting the guards, or go silent and work his way around them. The guards are going to be robots and not humanoids, as they are more complex to model.

The team has decided to work on the details as we progress with the development of the game.
